Several years ago my late husband experienced health issues for 6 months before an MRI result confirmed a diagnosis no one wants to hear: he had a terminal brain tumor. He fought hard with chemotherapy treatments and whole brain radiation but, after 20 months he lost his battle with cancer and passed away.

I had taken out insurance as soon as he was diagnosed but he didn't live beyond the 24 month requirement and the policy wasn't paid. I wish I had taken out insurance earlier but I waited too long — I never dreamed anything like that would happen.

I didn't receive a lump sum death benefit and it didn't take long for another reality to set in. I was responsible for a mortgage, credit card payments, vehicle loans, kids still at home, monthly utilities, daily expenses and everything else to keep a house running on ONE INCOME. I had no choice — I had to refinance the home and use the equity to pay off car loans and debt so me and the kids could manage on one income.

That experience changed my life forever. It is the reason I became a licensed insurance agent.
